“‘Heart Heat?'” you say. “Don’t you mean ‘heart beat?'”
NO, because daena’s new single is HOT, but in a cool way–which sounds contradictory but it’s not if you just listen to the song. This is some of the cleanest, clearest, lightest, brightest, feel good-est, electronic pop you’ll ever hear. As if from the sincerity only granted by experience, daena’s voice effortlessly captures the wondrous, fluttering emotions of romantic attraction found in a longtime friend. Who hasn’t toyed with that idea? Confession time: not you.
You know how you daydream about being the protagonist in a rom-com and your friend is the love interest, and you go on a montage of quirky dates, but the funny but sad but true thing is is that if the fantasy isn’t quite doing it for you, you just switch out one friend for another like some kind of love sociopath?
“Heart Heat” is like that–minus the weirdly manipulative, self-indulgent, romantic hypothetical.
On second thought, “Heart Heart” is nothing like that, mostly because it has all the eponymous heart it needs in its sounds and words to tell us when one knows that a close friend stokes their fire if you know what I mean. This is when speculation becomes certainty. As titillating as the prospect is, the music matches its uplifting energy. Producer griggs comes through with an inviting, translucent style perfect for a sunny day with your new flame; it’s a song that anyone could fall in love to–and in love with.
Having said that, I’m off to have several totally not awkward at all back-to-back one-on-one video chats with all of my friends. Toodle-oo!
