PRE-SAVE ‘WILDFIRE’

What first got you into music?
My dad. I remember this little toy Casio keyboard he bought me. It was maybe two octaves, and he would teach me melodies on it until I grew into a full size piano. I wish I still had it!

What first got you into music?
My dad. I remember this little toy Casio keyboard he bought me. It was maybe two octaves, and he would teach me melodies on it until I grew into a full size piano. I wish I still had it!

Are you from a musical or artistic family?
Yes. While my dad actually has more of an “engineer brain” (more on that later), his sister is a wonderful painter. My grandfather wrote poetry. My mom would usually have Marvin Gaye, Nat King Cole, or Ray Charles on in the car.

Who are the artists that inspired you to make music?
Innumerous, so random rapid fire: Alicia Keys, Ben Folds, Billy Joel, DJ Shadow, DJ Premiere, MUNA, The 1975, Kevin Garrett, Robyn, Christine and the Queens, Shura, The Night Game, King Princess, Loviet, Sigrid…

How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Hook-driven indie rock polished in a DIY aesthetic with a dash of Springsteen storytelling. But most days, the “maybe pile.”

How would you describe your creative process and how you approach?
I’m not unique in this regard because we live in an era of accessible home recording equipment, but I studied sound engineering and I love music production as much as songwriting. So I am often writing, recording, producing, and mixing all at the same time, across many projects. I’ll take something as far as I can, put it down, and pick something else up. I handle every element of making my sounds and produce most of my own artwork, too.

Who would be your dream artists to collaborate with?
MUNA

Has your music style changed much since you first started creating music?
I struggle to describe my style of music today, so I’m not sure if it’s changed over time. My guess is probably not.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
MUNA

What is one message you would give to your fans?
Thank you, sincerely.

What is the most useless talent you have?
Making myself laugh. Constantly.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
Absolutely. Mostly Coconuts by Kim Petras.

What do you get up to when you’re not making music?
I work a 9-5 to put a roof over my head. If I’m not staring at a screen, I’m probably at the beach blasting King Princess.

What is your favorite thing about making music?
Simply saying how I feel.

What is your least favorite thing about making music?
The entire process of finishing anything.

What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
It moves me. I get lost in it.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?
My grandfather once told me, “you got classy knees, show ’em off!”

How do practice self care while dealing with the challenges of the music industry?
Taking a break. One of the most important and necessary parts of any art from, I believe, is walking away from it.

If you were stranded on an island and could only have one album with you, which one would it be and why?
Coconuts by Kim Petras. Do I need to explain?
